Rudder Fairing
Time to start on another fiberglass portion of the build: the bottom rudder fairing. This piece was trimmed along the factory line and the fit was pretty good right from the get-go. Holes were drilled and nutplates installed for mounting. The fit wound up being sub-par. Buckling/pukering and some “dog-earing” toward the front of the […]

Rudder Installed
The rudder has been mounted! I’m quickly wrapping up work on the back end of the plane. The rudder was fairly uneventful to mount, though I anticipate substantially more work to get it hooked up…

EP1.16 Rudder Tips
Rudder Update
I noted that when I was little, these things were called fins. That keeps going through my mind as I sand away at the filler and primer, staring at the metal structure. The fin is almost done. Fin tip is final sanded, and needs only one more coat of primer. Rudder tip primed with filling […]
More Rudder Tips
A lot of Bondo added to the tips, and again, 99% sanded off. Well, maybe not 99%. It takes a bit of thickness to get these lines to flow. More than the elevators. It’s looking good. Final sanding and primer tomorrow.
Rudder Tips

Once it was glassed it was easy to see there wasn’t enough clearance. Rather than play games like I did on the horizontal stab, I […]
Rudder Fiberglass
Well, hopefully I can make shorter work out of the rudder fiberglass. The elevators and stabilizers took way longer than I’d like. The rudder pieces fit about as well as the others: not great. The vertical stabilizer tip doesn’t have a great line that flows into the rudder. It sits low and droops. I see […]
