Rudder Tips

The past couple days have been two steps forward, one (or two) steps back. But it’s not awful.

The first iteration of glass on the vertical stabilizer tip was flawed. Once it was glassed it was easy to see there wasn’t enough clearance. Rather than play games like I did on the horizontal stab, I cut the glass out and tried again.

Version two looked much better. Clearance was great. But…
The piece looked wide, and indeed I think I allowed the foam to force the prefab fiberglass out a bit. This made it 3/16″ -ish wider than the tab of the rudder. I wasn’t happy, and at this point I wanted it done right.

Version three is in the works, and slims the tip to better match the rudder. I’m happy with it, but it will add a few days as two layups need to be done, each taking roughly a day to cure.

The Rudder tip is being fitted and drilled into place. The already dimpled holes makes this tougher. I don’t know whether to drill all holes to final size and dimple the aluminum, then countersink the tips just to get it done, or make do with how it currently is.
