Avionics Rundown

Hello. This post is provided as a supplement to the avionics review video, and houses the files for your own review–which makes me nervous, so a bit about that:

The file provided are to demonstrate my approach for wiring only. They are not intended to educate, illustrate, or instruct you on how to wire your airplane, nor should they be used for any other purpose than to provide additional clarity on how I wired my plane. I cannot be held responsible for inaccuracies, omissions, or lack of clarity around any given aspect of these files, as again, they’re for clarification on my processes only.

In addition, I’ll try my best to answer questions provided to me, but may have limited bandwidth. Please be understanding that I’m only able to provide so much additional clarification via email or otherwise.

Most of all, I appreciate you following my build, providing feedback, and engaging with all that I put out there. Y’all–for the most part–make it a real joy.

Some notes about the video

I did my best to do a few things with the video:

  • Capture all Costs – I undoubtedly missed a few things. (Control grips, for example.) However, I’ve provided what I feel to be unparalleled transparency on what I bought, and how much I’ve spend.
  • Remove Avoidable Costs – You will have some waste. With careful planning, and help from me (hopefully), you can avoid some of the waste that I’ve incurred. That’s one of the points about all of this.
  • Provide Objective Review – Wiring your own panel isn’t for everyone. I have no agenda, and haven’t attempted to sway the data in one direction–not for my ego, and not to prove a point. Hopefully, my honest review provides additional clarity on the costs of taking this project on yourself.

Files

In addition to the disclaimer above, please note that my files have areas that are incomplete. It is on my list to complete them, but getting them out alongside this video was a priority. One such area is the wiring of the ELT. This is a regret of mine, as careful planning of this element can prevent you from having to make later alteration, and can provide you with the knowledge necessary to order your ELT programmed correctly. Without this, many people have had to reprogram their ELT at a cost. For more information, I suggest looking at the ELT section of my build videos.

Because my files are for reference, I’m providing PDFs of everything. I’m not able to easily provide native files, and I feel doing so opens a door that I’d rather leave shut for now. I hope folks will understand.

Waste

I tried to carefully capture some waste. Like purchases in general, I didn’t get it all. And neither will you. So that’s why I think the waste figures are an accurate representation of what can be avoided. I wasted a lot in the fabrication area. There’s a bit of wire waste that goes beyond what a normal build will have, I believe.

Data File vs. Purchase File

I’ve touted the merits of my wire pivot chart. You’ll see in areas it matches quite well to what was ordered. Anyone should be able to quickly point out that this means nothing without knowing what was used.

Indeed, that is the crucial data point, and for now, you’ll have to take my word for it. When it worked, it worked. You’ll see I have ordered much more red and black wire than my wire chart dictates. This is because many of the fuse-switch-ground runs for system (flaps, lights, etc.) aren’t included in the list–I mention this in the video.

Other areas appear to have worked extremely well–two strand and three strand are very close when you reconcile what was called out, what was ordered, and what I have left.

Ryan, thanks for the files. I have a virtually identical panel to yours except with the VPX system and I am struggling a little with the serial interconnects. I have no electrical skills but was determined to learn as I go. I’ve really enjoyed your series of videos as my project has paralleled yours. I even have a French Bulldog helping as well.
